Here's our layout in the barbershop: 14 people, and almost all of them have flexible hours, some have children, some are also freelancers. Before https://shifton.com/shift-scheduling, we were also captives of Excel and endless correspondence in Telegram: "Can you marry me?", "Why am I on the weekend again?", "Can I not set it for two days in a row?" - and all that. We installed Shifton almost by accident - on some HR forum, a manager from a fitness club mentioned that it helps, and I decided to try it. I'll say right away - our expectations were skeptical, but the result really surprised us. The main feature is the very same schedule generator for employees that you asked about. It really works - but! - provided that you set everything up correctly at the start. It's not a "magic button", like pressed - and done. You need to enter data for each employee: who can work when, how many hours a week they should work, who has restrictions on days or times of day. For example, we indicated that one master works only in the morning, another - only on certain days because of school. After we entered everything, the system really began to offer adequate, balanced schedules. Moreover, it even takes into account such things as the minimum number of hours between shifts or the even distribution of days off. Of course, sometimes we adjust something manually - well, because life is like that, force majeure happens anyway. But in general, 85 percent of the schedule is generated automatically, and this saves a lot of time.

I'm just looking at Shifton, but reading you, I understand how many similar pains everyone has. It's especially interesting that it was the schedule generator for employees that really helped many in practice. I think it's worth testing at least in one department.
