where to buy pond plants

Pond plants are essential in creating a well balanced ecosystem in your water garden. It is recommended to have one third to one half of the surface area covered with plants during the heat of the summer. Choosing pond plants from each of the four groups of water garden plants will help create a balanced ecosystem in your pond. FLOATING POND PLANTS - Floating pond plants are prolific growers and will spread across the waters' surface providing shade and coverage for the water gardens inhabitants. Floating aquatic plants are excellent for filtration because their roots absorb nutrients from the water that might otherwise cause algae. The roots of the floating plants provide spawning places for fish and create a hiding place for baby fish.SUBMERGED OXYGENATING PLANTS - Submerged pond plants are often referred to as oxygenating plants. Submerged plants receive nutrients from the water and help keep water clear. Baby fish love to hide in Hornwort and Anacharis. Use one bunch for every 2 to 4 square feet of surface area.HARDY WATER LILIES & TROPICAL WATER LILIES - We offer a large selection of hardy and tropical waterlilies for your pond. Your water garden isn't complete without a waterlily. Water Lilies are available in a variety of colors and sizes. The lily pads provide shade and protection for your water garden inhabitants. The waterlily plant, once established in your water garden will reward you with many flowers throughout the summer months. Hardy lilies will bloom continuously May thru September. They overwinter well and the water lily will return in the spring once again rewarding you with a lovely pond plant. Tropical Water Lilies are spectacular aquatic plants that make a magnificent centerpiece for your water garden. Hardy water lilies have very beautiful flowers, but the tropical water lily with its larger, flashier and very fragrant flowers are the ones that command the most attention. Flowers of the tropical lily rise several inches out of the water and are more prolific and fragrant than hardy lilies.BOG PLANTS, POND LOTUS AND MARGINAL POND PLANTS - Hardy bog plants and tropical marginal pond plants accent the water garden by adding shape and color to the water garden. Adding bog plants or marginal plants along the edge of the water garden, stream bed or waterfall will give your pond a more natural appearance. Many of the tropical bog plants will winter over as house plants. Lotus pond plants are a beautiful addition to your water garden. Lotus are hardy perennials and will reward you with exotic flowers year after year. Lotus are well suited for patio container gardening also.

Though we still need you to follow our planting instructions and acclimating plants guide when taking them out of the box, these plants are some of the very easiest we can get you started. Jennings mentions some very easy bog (wetland) plants (for shallow water), hardy water lily varieties, and some floating plants that are not used as often as they should.

Jennings will describe a good size container, the proper planting matrix and the fertilizer schedule of annual water lilies which need temperatures of 72 degrees or warmer. Keeping these plants happy will have them blooming daily into fall with ease!

Most all our plants need to stay cool and hydrated. Let us begin by getting a few buckets of pond water to a shady side of the house and acclimate these plants properly for the first 48 to 72 hours before putting in sunlight. Do not take indoors to acclimate, that is too dark.

Ken Landon & Tim Davis from the International Waterlily Collection in San Angelo show us how they divide and replant a hardy waterlily. This is important to keeping the water lily plants flowering freely.

This depends on the time of year you place the order. In late winter and spring live orders are usually held until proper planting time. Schools and labs buy plants all year, check with us by phone or email if you need something in the chilly part of the year and we can let you know before ordering if we can ship that right out.

We ship Live plants Monday - Wednesday each week until June 1. After June 1 we usually only ship live plants on Mondays and Tuesdays. Your order must be in the previous weekday by 9:30 AM Eastern Time in order to be processed and prepped for shipping the next day. Orders placed after 9:30am Eastern on the last preparation day of the week (Tuesday or Wednesday) will then be held until the following week for shipping. We aim for plants to arrive within 2 or at most 3 days of shipping. Depending on the quantity of tadpoles they may be one or two days in transit. Transit does not account for the processing time which could be 1 day or as many as 5 in hot summer weather when we ship only at the beginning of each week.

Pond plants bring finishing beauty to your waterscapes. Consider elegant crowd pleasers such as bright, red lotus flowers accented with hardy water lilies. Landscape with cattails planted in media soil along edges of your shallows or falls for greenish brown backdrops. Floating plants such as hyacinths or poppies can reduce algae or just add the floating beauty you want above koi.

We will ship when the plants are ready to ship in Spring, and also when your hardiness zone and current weather conditions are safe for the plants. We generally hold the order until all plants are available; let us know if you want plants from one order shipped separately, which will incur additional shipping charges. Tropical waterlilies will be available starting in late April (May for some varieties) no matter what your zone is. 041b061a72
